On this page we list some of the things that happened in Berneray in 2005. The lists starts in May of that year, when this website was launched.


May 2005

Monday 2nd
8pm

Calum Macdonald, Labour party election candidate, held a public meeting in the community hall.

Tuesday 3rd

The Isle of Berneray Website went live.

Thursday 5th
7am to 10pm

The UK general election was held; voters in Berneray had a choice of six candidates. Voting took place in the community hall. Angus MacNeil was elected as our Member of Parliament.


June 2005

Saturday 25th

In the travel section of the Daily Telegraph, Nicholas Crane writes a piece about holidaying in the Outer Hebrides. Part of this concerns staying on Berneray.

27th and 28th

Historical celebration of Berneray School to mark its closure later in the week. Events, including an exhibition of old school pictures and memories, were held during both afternoons and both evenings at the school.

Wednesday 29th

Berneray Development Group releases its 5th newsletter.

Thursday 30th
7pm

In the week that it closes, Berneray school held a special event (including a dance and buffet) to celebrate its place in the community over the years.


July 2005

Monday 4th

Hebridean Challenge. Contestants spend overnight on Berneray.

Monday 11th
10am

Sheepdog trials on Berneray. Organised in conjunction with North Uist Agricultural Society. The draw and the event start at 10am, on the machair at Borve.

16th
to 23rd

Berneray week, an annual series of sporting, cultural, musical and social events was held in various locations on Berneray.

Wednesday 20th

The book launch of the Ruisigearraidh Croft History volume.

Friday 22nd

Andrew Ross, a resident of Berneray, sends probably the first email from the uninhabited island of Pabbay.

Friday 29th
10pm

The Sounds of Kilpheader put on a well-attended concert in Berneray community hall.


September 2005

2nd and 3rd
8pm

Music on the Isles. Two public concerts were held in Berneray community hall, as the culmination of the annual Music Summer School.

Friday 16th

The Isle of Berneray Community website was shortlisted for the Scottish Community of the Year awards, in the "Community enhancement through the internet" category.


December 2005

Thursday 8th

Following the shortlisting of Berneray Community website, a delegation from Berneray attended the award ceremony of the Scottish Community of the Year awards. Berneray was shortlisted and received a "commended" in the category of "Community enhancement through the Internet". The Hebridean newspaper has a story on our award.

Thursday 15th
7 pm

Berneray on the TV! On BBC2 Scotland at 7pm, the transmission of the Comadaidh Oir (Comedy Gold) programme. Recorded in Berneray community hall this summer, this features a number of Gaelic comedy sketches.

Thursday 29th
7:30 pm

Berneray community Christmas meal and dance. Free to full-time residents. Visitors, family members and occasional residents: 10 pounds each. Elderly full-time residents unable to attend were given a food parcel. A few pictures of the meal are on this website.
