About this website : Fios mun Làrach-lìn
Why this website was developedThis website is owned (apart from content provided by other people) by a private individual. There are four reasons why this website was developed: 1. Providing access to information sources for residents. The website acts as a "one stop shop" for information about organisations and future events. Pages of links enable residents to quickly find online services they heavily use, including weather forecasts, buying/selling of fishing boats, local council information and links to popular online stores. Consequently, many Berneray residents have set their web browser default page to this website. 2. Tourism promotion. The website contains detailed information for first-time and repeat visitors on how to get here, where to stay, and what to do on Berneray. 3. Promoting Berneray businesses and services. Most (not all) Berneray businesses are listed; each has a page, usually containing pictures of products/service, a description, and contact details. Most Berneray businesses promote the website, thus providing cross-promotion of other businesses and services. 4. Halting population decline. Like many islands, Berneray suffers from gradual and long-term depopulation. By highlighting and publicising the range of services, social infrastructure and viable businesses, it is hoped that the website will encourage people to discover the island and consider moving here, especially taking into account the safe environment and very low levels of crime, traffic and pollution. The website gives a more accurate and fuller idea of what Berneray is like than most other source of information. 2nd anniversaryThe website celebrated its 2nd birthday on 3rd May 2007. During that two years there were 2,756,334 page accesses, from people in 173 of the 192 member states of the UN. In that time, we also received 840 email enquiries through the website from around the world. The Berneray website serves as our voluntary contribution to the island. It remains independent of any group, organisation, or tedious politics. We thank the various groups and businesses, many Berneray residents, and our elected representatives for their support and positiveness over the last two years. More information
