Main building of the youth hostel Berneray Youth Hostel sits towards the north end of the island, close to the primary school. Either follow the road around the bay, or take the bus which terminates close to the hostel. The hostel is placed at the end of one of the beaches, offering stunning views over the Sound of Harris and a great place to have a barbecue.

The hostel has 20 beds in total; bookings are not taken. Prices for 2008 are £9 per night for people aged 18 and over, or £6 per night for under 18s. The fee is payable in the hostel by either cash or cheque.

There is no "lights out" or curfew policy, but please respect other sleeping visitors. The hostel has a very well equipped kitchen, heating, a shower, toilet and a coal-burning stove.


The main sleeping accommodation in the youth hostelSleeping accommodation is provided in dormitories. The hostel has bunk beds, mattresses, pillows and duvets. Sheet sleeping bags can be hired at the hostel (£1.50). Towels are not provided.

For practical reasons, and the well being of the children themselves, it is not possible to accommodate children under 5 years of age. No special facilities are available. Also, no dogs.

People can also camp near to the hostel and use its facilities, for £5. For people using the hostel facilities in the day only e.g. to make a cup of tea, the charge is £1.
