The Standing Stone: Clach Mhor
The standing stone is about eight feet high. It sits on the brow of Beinn a' Chlaidh (the hill of the graveyard). This was the traditional site of township meetings several centuries ago. The standing stone was formerly encircled by three concentric rings of boulders, but most of these were used to make houses around the year 1900. Martin Martin (a famous historian and traveller in the Outer Hebrides) states that a chapel, dedicated to St. Columba, was built on this hill in the 6th century. Later, a church was built on the site to Saint Maolrubha, Mulruba or Maree (from which the local shop derives its name). Date: April 23rd, 2005Photographer: John Kirriemuir, Berneray |
