Berneray Development Group : Buidheann Leasachaidh

Berneray Development Group (BDG) was formed in October 2002 and is a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. It aims to work hand in hand with the Community Council on a variety of projects of value and interest to the community as a whole.

A specific key responsibility of the BDG is the management of the Nurse's Cottage, a recently-opened facility which houses a display by the Berneray Historical Society, a tourist information point, a youth café and also office facilities which are available for rent.

The BDG also operates various management and maintenance contracts around the island on behalf of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

The BDG holds meetings approximately every other month and also issues newsletters to inform the community of its activities. It is envisaged that these communication aspects of the BDG's work will increase in the future.

Objects

The objects of the BDG have been developed to benefit the general public in Berneray and the surrounding area, and are as follows:

To provide facilities for recreation and leisure with a view to improving conditions of life.
To advance education and promote opportunities for learning.
To protect and preserve the environment.
To promote the advancement of education by the study of local history and provide a base for the research and display of local photographs and documents.
To relieve poverty.
To promote the trade and industry of Berneray and surrounding area.
To promote, establish, operate and/or support other schemes and projects of a charitable nature.
