Youth Club : Club òigridh

A boat in Bays Loch

History

Berneray Youth Club has been in operation since the 1970s. Over the years, numbers have fluctuated, recently reaching an all time low. For years the Community Hall was used on Saturdays, with sessions for primary school children in the afternoons and for secondary school pupils in the evenings. Children played ball games, did crafts, played pool and football, went swimming and, in the summer, did outdoor activities with Uist Outdoor Centre.

Because of the recent low primary school numbers it was decided that younger members could go to Lochmaddy Youth Club on Saturday nights. This has been happening since Christmas 2004 and has proved successful.

The Youth Café

There is a Youth Café on the island in the old Nurse's Cottage. The Youth Café is a place for young people to congregate, and contains various games and activities. Lower secondary pupils use this on a Wednesday night, and older pupils can use it on all other nights except Sunday.

Committee

The Youth Club committee is constitutionally driven, and meets on a variable basis.

Fund raising

In the spring of 2005 we undertook a "rubbish cleanup day" to collect debris from the January storm. This also raised funds for the group.

Youth Café members undertake fundraising to pay for their use of the Nurses' Cottage.

We are interested in sources of funding that we can use to increase the range of facilities for the youth of Berneray.
