Peat stack

A blackhouse. Note the three different roofing materials (corrugated iron, slate and thatch). On the left is a stack of peat, which along with coal was the main fuel for houses until recently (gas and oil are contemporary options). Peat was cut on other islands or on North Uist, left to dry and transported over.
