Milking the cow

Milking the cow

Milking the cow outside the house. Traditionally, most crofts had a cow or two to provide milk, butter, cheese, meat and manure. When the population of Berneray was much higher (a few centuries ago the population numbered several hundred), the issue of how many animals people owned was contentious due to the limited amount of land on the island.

This particular house has been kept in very good condition, and can be seen near the natural harbour in Backhill.
