Taigh Ailean Cottage

With fantastic sea views, a wonderfully snug interior and a true Hebridean heritage, Taigh Ailean is the perfect thatched cottage to experience authentic island life.

Taigh Ailean (‘Allan’s House’) is named after our family’s great-great-uncle Allan, a respected crofter on Berneray. It has recently been lovingly restored, retaining its original 5-feet-thick stone walls and using traditional thatching grass from the west side of the island.

Located just a few minutes walk from one of Berneray’s best beaches offering panoramic views of the Harris hills, the cottage sleeps 4 (2 couples). There is a kingsize bedroom, double sofa bed in the living room, a bathroom with bath, and laundry facilities. There is a small, well-equipped kitchen with electric oven with 4 hobs, microwave and fridge/freezer. Tea, coffee and sugar are provided.

To ensure you remain as warm and comfortable as possible, as well as under-floor heating, there is a large coal, wood and peat burning stove, with fuel and fire starting kit provided, as well as blankets and extra heaters.

Even though Berneray offers an escape from urban life, high-speed internet is available in the cottage and mobile phone reception is a few minutes walk. For those rainy days, we have satellite TV, books and board games.

Berneray is a great place for dogs so you are most welcome to bring them to the cottage.

Prices range from £550 - £700 for the week, with shorter stays available. Please contact taighailean@gmail.com for more details or book direct through our Owners Direct page here.
