Visitor Information Centre at The Nurse's Cottage : Ionad-fiosrachaidh

The Nurse's Cottage, situated just past the harbour, is home to Berneray Historical Society. Visit the Historical Society website at www.bernerayhistorical.com. Please email info@bernerayhistorical.com for more information.
During the summer months the centre is staffed by knowledgeable local volunteers and is open to the public. The building includes extensive historical displays containing information about Berneray, and also visitor information. The displays are mainly photographic and genealogical - unfortunately we don't have the space to display a lot of artefacts. The Historical Society has run a number of projects in recent years which have aimed to research, digitise and make accessible aspects of the unique Gaelic culture and history of the island. Work from these projects is available to see at The Nurse's Cottage.
The building also houses a visitor information centre, which has a focus on green tourism, to help you make the most of your visit to the island and find out, for instance, where you can see seals and have the best chance of perhaps glimpsing an otter. To find out about our summer programme of natural history walks, please call us on the number below and leave a message if nobody is around - we will get back to you.
We have a range of literature, including free leaflets and postcards and books to buy, covering both the historical and nature aspects.
The Nurse's Cottage is also a wi-fi zone and offers fixed internet access. Both of these are charged at £1 for 20 minutes. Internet access is only available during normal opening hours in the summer months. Unaccompanied access to the building is not possible.
There is ample parking and toilet facilities.
Whether you are researching your family history or just want to know what time the next bus is, please call in for more information or a chat.
Admission is by donation. Proceeds go to support the work of Berneray Historical Society.
