Berneray Community Council : Comhairle Coimhearsnachd

Berneray Community Council deals with issues that concern and affect the island and its residents, for example:
  • planning applications
  • developments that affect the island
  • utilities and service providers to the island
  • local transport issues and infrastructure, such as buses, roads, harbour developments and ferry crossings
  • any issues that are brought to its attention by residents of Berneray.

The group operates under a constitution and is a funded body, with discretionary control over how it spends its monies. It has 6 members plus a clerk, all of whom are residents of Berneray.

Members meet on a monthly basis, usually in the Community Hall. All residents of Berneray are welcome to attend meetings. Meetings of the Community Council have, to date, consisted of a mix of new and older residents; debate is informal and open to all.

The Community Council is the first point of contact with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and a councillor gives a report at every meeting. It also liaises with other local community councils, such as North Uist.
